Hythe Guided Town Walk – Thursday 20th August 2015
You’ve had a wonderful time at the Venetian Fete so, if you’re still around the day after – Thursday 20th August – why not join us for a guided walk around Hythe.
Whether you are a history buff or just enjoy a gentle stroll around interesting places, the Hythe town walk is for you.
A fabulously knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide will both walk and talk you around our town taking in all the sights: starting at the Town Hall you will be regaled with stories of local events and people, our relationship with France over the years and the history of the Cinque Ports.
Heading out through the undercroft with its ‘interesting’ inscription you will pass many fascinating and historic buildings, several with their own unique features, including the King’s Head, St John’s Almshouses, Oaklands and many more. You will stroll along the towpath of the Royal Military Canal – built to keep Napoleon at bay but not completed until 1809 when the threat of invasion was long past – then through the High Street and up to the eleventh century church of St Leonard with its famous ossuary – one of only two in the UK.
Meet at 10.30am at the Town Hall, High Street, Hythe. It costs 50p (crypt extra) and lasts for around one and a half hours.
With over 1,000 years of history, Hythe is truly charming – do join us.
